When I was young if I was reading a book and something bad happened to the character I liked, I'd just rewrite the ending in my head so that all of the books had happy endings!!! I think I even did that with Watership Down!! They probably all sat around eating carrots and talking philosophy at the end or something!!vickiejohnstonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15947507866512596346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5105169001740479425.post-14643541722693581632012-03-09T21:57:43.445+00:002012-03-09T21:57:43.445+00:00heard*heard*Ada Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10452366264560339870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5105169001740479425.post-8787003027887020132012-03-09T21:57:29.197+00:002012-03-09T21:57:29.197+00:00As soon as I hear the character's monologue (i...As soon as I hear the character's monologue (in the living room scene), I was thinking "uh-oh"...Why does this feel like a "goodbye"? I actually shed a tear. I really liked him/her.Ada Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10452366264560339870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5105169001740479425.post-63678412700136934022012-03-06T21:57:17.344+00:002012-03-06T21:57:17.344+00:00Thanks for commenting!!

Even the baddie I couldn't bump off, but then I am writing for kids! :) Maybe one day I'll write a horror! Brrriiiiggggghhhht eyes burning like fire... :)

Cheers Valerie! I totally agree with your points :) Every character should live and breathe a little.vickiejohnstonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15947507866512596346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5105169001740479425.post-22483401358518779282012-03-06T21:32:12.039+00:002012-03-06T21:32:12.039+00:00In writing, as in reality, sometimes bad things ha...In writing, as in reality, sometimes bad things happen to good characters. I learned a valuable lesson from a very good writer who had what I call a 'throwaway' character. You suspected he was going to die because he was so thinly fleshed out. And to me, that's a cheat. Every character should be there for more than just dying.
As a seat of the pants writer, I never know when a character is going to die, it always surprises me, but it's always right for the story and the character. I've cried as I wrote the scene, but the story always comes first.Valerie Douglashttp://www.valeriedouglasbooks.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5105169001740479425.post-17747222615747260242012-03-06T21:23:41.007+00:002012-03-06T21:23:41.007+00:00I've got the song, Bright Eyes, in my head now...I've got the song, Bright Eyes, in my head now hahaha!!! I'm a Star trek lover myself, I can totally relate to that. And having the name, Kurt, I wish I had a quid for every time someone said to me, "Beam me up, Scotty!" LOL

I love my characters too much to kill them off. Well, so far. I do have one of my MCs get it though in my Truth Teller series. I didn't do it to make the reader's cry, though I sure hope they do :D

Great post! :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
