A Poem a Day (468): Is this what they fought for?

Is this what they fought for?
 
Is this what they fought for,
this horror, this collapse?
 
We see the end approaching,
fearing the form it will take,
 
the meaning for the future,
scrawling out all hope.
 
Devastation and aggression
amidst a mass silencing.
 
Men, women and children
left to fend for themselves.
 
Impossible to save them all,
impossible to let them fall.
