A Poem a Day (340): Wildflowers

This year's final poem of the day. Over and out, 2020.

Wildflowers

Footsteps echo
in this chilled room
once so warm.

Missing the sun,
a magpie huddles,
reluctant to hop.

He recalls summer,
the heat on his back
ruffling feathers.

It peeks at times,
this dripping yolk,
holding on to the sky.

And we tread water,
rise like wildflowers
squeezed in across fields,

heads swaying in the breeze.
Buzzing bees stalk us,
admiring our pastel colours,

following our scent for miles
and miles to feed on us.
We are such delicate beauties.

Packed like commuters,
we try to maintain distance,
but we are rooted here,

not walking or turning.
Everything is stationary,
our existence so simple.

Stems blow, petals unfurl.
We furnish spring and summer
with a wealth of colour.

NYE poem: Man in the Moon

A poem for NY Eve. I wrote it back in June, but it seems a fitting, hopeful one for today. Happy New Year. I hope 2021 brings you joy, health and good things.

Man in the Moon

This curved moon lifts and strides
in time with a streak of stars
glittering on pitch-black shores.

He slumbers still, doesn’t stir,
this sprightly Man in the Moon,
whose sole function is to study
humanity, nature, this full globe,
nurturing each deserving thing.

He dreams of peace and love,
wraps it up in a melancholy song,
peeling off hate, pain and cruelty.
He annihilates guns and strife,
changing them into wildflowers.

He revives each extinct species
and protects the ones remaining.
He halts cancers of the body,
pathogens of the glorious mind.

In this arc of the silvery moon,
in wistful slumber he creates
a perfected version of it all.

Mists of wintry white & 5 more haiku

Some winter haiku from Life’s Rhythms
(a collection of 365 haiku, published April 2012)

Mists of wintry white
curl like smoke in the mountains,
hide the wolves of old.

Ice blows a blanket,
protects the silent sleeping
bears that birth tonight.

A moonlight whisper,
streaks of cloud fingers twisting.
Silver stars glisten.

In white snow-lain fields
leaps the majestic dance of
the Japanese crane.

Paw prints in the snow –
Whiskers watches from the wall,
white envelops all.

He watches the sky;
dark opens up with twinkling
silver – how it shines.
