NaPoWriMo (Day 11): Hope

For the month of April, I’m writing a poem a day from prompts on https://www.napowrimo.net. You can click on the headlines (Day One, etc) to view/add comments. There’s also a list of participants’ sites below the site header.

Day 11

And now for our (optional) prompt. Following up on yesterday’s love poem, I have for you another deceptively simple challenge. Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem about a very large thing. It could be a mountain or a blue whale or a skyscraper or a planet or the various contenders for the honour of being the Biggest Ball of Twine.

Hope

It’s a deceptively large word,
a small thought grown from humble beginnings.
See a child’s hand stretch up to the heavens
to ask the question of the day.

If we ever find ourselves in darkness
or lost in unfathomable labyrinths,
sprung up by life or created by others,
we can reach out also,
search with our hearts for what’s inside,
embracing faith and love,
and the simple things we take for given.

In endless gratitude
for the sky, the seas and the stars,
we count on hope.
