A Poem a Day (515): In the backyard

In the backyard

Blackbird stands stock still, listening
for worms beneath his feet, lemon
beak, bright eye, feathers reflecting
the sun. With a darting head, he digs
swiftly, flicking up dirt for his reward.

The watching cat darts from her hideout,
straight and true, but the blackbird
is faster, spies her, flies like an arrow.
Chastened, the cat ambushes a cricket,
licks her lips, whiskers bristling.
